The first day at a new job -
It’s exciting, new,
and … completely nerve-wracking.
It’s perfectly normal to be nervous on your first day of a
new job. This is why we’ve compiled some of our favorite tips for conquering
those first day jitters.
Get There Early
This will help conquer the nerves that come with fearing
showing up late. Getting in early will make you feel more prepared and
collected before you start your workday. Any way to effectively eliminate some
of your nerves will help you feel better about the day ahead. Not to mention,
you might impress your boss in the process.
Ask (a lot of)
Questions
There is going to be a lot of new information thrown at you
on a first day. It is important to ask questions if there are things you do not
understand. The faster you get your questions answered, the faster you will be
able to successfully acclimate to the role. We’ve all heard the saying, “there
are no dumb questions,” so be sure to use your resources! Employers want to get
your questions answered right away so that you can begin to become familiar and
comfortable with the tasks at hand. To help with this, bring a notepad and pen.
You can jot down notes as you are learning, and have a better idea of the types
of questions you need answered.
Talk to People
Make sure to introduce yourself to your co-workers if your
boss or supervisor does not take you to make the rounds. If you ever need to
reach out to someone by phone or email, they will be able to match a face up to
your name. Your co-workers are your greatest resources as you begin to find
your place in the organization. If you’d like to take this a step further, find
someone knowledgeable that can act as a mentor to you and teach you the ins and
outs of the company and your position.
Above all, be yourself! You got hired for a reason, and you
are simply there to show off your skills. No need for nerves, you’ve got this!
